Ahhh...I saw 4 movies this weekend...things are finally going back to normal for me! I haven't posted any reviews in awhile...so here are a bunch.
Paranormal Activity
This is one of the best truly scary movies to come out in a long time. It is very reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project, but IMO, less annoying. However, it's one of those movies that can easily get over hyped...and then I worry that people might be let down by it. It's a small budget, indie movie with basically 3 actors, none of them famous. There is a lot of suspense and some truly creepy/eerie scenes...and just enough humor to keep it interesting/entertaining. I am rarely scared at the movies anymore, but this one will keep me sleeping w/the light on for awhile!
The Invention of Lying
I was very ambivalent about this movie. On one hand, I laughed out loud several times. It's an
interesting/original premise - it takes place in an alternate reality where no one has ever lied before. The word "truth" or "true" doesn't even exist, because there's no such thing as something that isn't true. Then one day, one guy suddenly realizes that he doesn't have to be honest and the hilarity ensues. However, what I didn't like about the movie was how mean people were to Ricky's character, especially Jennifer Garner. She just repeats over and over again how unattractive he is. I know it's just a movie, but it made me sad that looks are THAT important to a lot of people. And I know that they are. Plus, i didn't understand why Gervais' character was still so into Garner's character when she really didn't seem like that nice of a person. As someone who finds humor in religious things, it was pretty funny that the movie parodied Moses and the 10 commandments. So if you're easily offended by that sort of thing, this movie probably isn't for you. Oh, and it does have some wonderful cameos!
A Serious Man
This is the latest Coen Brothers movie. The critics have heaped a ton of praise on this movie. As with many Coen Brother movies, be prepared to be frustrated by the
ending. The critic in me said "yeah, this is a good movie - interesting characters, some suspense, and an interesting turn of events", but the movie fan in me was saying "meh...not so great". Plus, it is a very Jewish movie...and by that I mean that the main characters are Jewish and there are a lot of references to Jewish customs/philosophies. That's not a bad thing, but I did feel like there were some things that might have gone over my head because I'm not Jewish. Anyways...if you like Coen Brother movies, you'll probably appreciate this to some degree. If you like serious dramas about serious men...you'll probably like this. But if you prefer lighter fare with less serious men, then go see Couples Retreat!
Capitalism: A Love Story
Say what you will about Michael Moore's politics, but the guy knows how to make sarcasm funny. I didn't like this movie nearly as much as I liked Sicko, but it was OK. I really can't stand his opinions, or the way he is so biased against republicans. I mean, he TRIES to come across like he's picking on both sides equally...but it's pretty obvious when he picks on Reagan and Bush and doesn't even touch Clinton (despite the numbers he shows jumping up a LOT under Clinton's admin) that he's pretty one-sided. Anyways, I will admit that he has SOME valid points. Our system is broken and needs to be fixed, but total socialism is NOT the answer, IMO. Life in America is pretty freakin' good for MOST people compared to life in 3rd world countries...and a lot of that is due to capitalism. I dunno...at least his movies make you think and are good at causingarguments healthy discussions - it can't hurt to see it and decide for yourself if his points are valid or not. But I wanted to smack people who were clapping afterwards. GIVE ME A BREAK! It's not like it's Star Wars or something! :P

So, the best part of Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story movie is a small video from youtube (directed by someone else) promoting tourism for Cleveland. There are actually 2 similar videos, but in the movie, Moore must've used the best clips from both, because it was a hybrid of these two vids below. I really like the tagline at the end of the 2nd video. I've never lived in or been to Cleveland, but I do imagine it being quite a shit-hole.
I know the Letterman scandal broke a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't had a chance to blog since then, so I just wanted to offer my POV on the subject.
Ugh! I'm soooo disappointed in Dave. I really thought he was one of the good guys....i.e. the type of human with a penis that doesn't need to stick it in everyone within a 7 inch radius...especially when it already has a pretty solid home! Grrr. If I find out that Conan is unfaithful...well, that's just IT! No more late night for me! And no more men for me! I will definitely swear off men if Conan is a cheater! But I still love me some Dave. I KNEW there was something going on there with Stephanie Birkitt. Everytime I saw her on the show, I was like "she looks like the sleep-with-the-boss type". If I'd known Dave was in to shy dorky super young girls, well, I would have interned for him free a LONG time ago!
I just feel so bad for his wife. She should probably dump his ass and take a lot of money from him. But I'm guessing if she stuck around for 20 some odd years just waiting for a ring, she's prolly not going anywhere. But any woman who doesn't believe "once a cheater, always a cheater" is a fool. The only way to make sure they don't cheat again is by chopping it off!
Then again, we don't know the whole story...maybe his wife was cheating on him...with Leno. If she wasn't, she SHOULD! That would be some awesome payback!
