Best Movies of 2008

Honorable Mentions: Choke, Mamma Mia!, The Wrestler, Towelhead, Doubt, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Priceless, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and The Visitor

10. Hamlet 2 (Rock Me Sexy Jesus...need I say more!?)
9. Son of Rambow (Cute little comedy about 2 young boys trying to re-create the movie Rambo)
8. Tropic Thunder (The fake trailers at the beginning make this movie a top-10 automatically; Downey Jr. & Tom Cruise give hilarious performances)
7. Slumdog Millionaire (Had no expectations going into this movie and found it very sweet, charming, and oddly humorous; the Bollywood dancing at the end is just a bonus)
6. The Dark Knight (Heath Ledger really put his all into this role and it's a great superhero movie to boot)
5. Revolutionary Road (powerful performances by leads and supporting cast make this a must see)
4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (beautiful and unique story with a good cast and great direction)
3. In Bruges (Maybe not as good as some other movies, but good AND enjoyable)
2. Religulous - As someone who is fairly skeptical about religion, I thought this humorous documentary hit the nail on the head.
1.  Gran Torino - I'm a sucker for Clint...and this is some of his best work!

Worst Movies of 2008

10.
Be Kind, Rewind (huge misstep for a good idea)
9. The Haunting of Molly Hartley (Nothing funny to say...just a bad movie)
8. Wanted (James McAvoy is sexy, but the rest of this movie is ridiculous)
7. Drillbit Taylor (sorry Owen...at least now I know why you tried to kill yourself)
6What Happens in Vegas (ugh...sooo bad.  And I usually enjoy dumb comedies)
5. Strange Wilderness (Not that strange...just bad)
4. The X-Files: I Want to Believe (I want to believe this was a joke and the REAL movie hasn't come out yet.)
3. Superhero Movie (a momentary lapse in judgment...I thought it might have 1 or 2 redeeming qualities.  I was wrong).
2. 88 Minutes (88+ minutes I WISH I could get back)
1. Synechdoche, NY (I need to create a new word for how bad this movie was)

Movies I didn't see cuz I knew they would suck: Semi-Pro, Disaster Movie, The Love Guru, Star Wars-the Clone Wars, Meet the Spartans, The Hottie & The Nottie, Space Chimps, The Women, Babylon AD,  and 10,0000 BC.

10 Best Male Performances of 2008

10.  Anil Kapoor in Slumdog Millionaire (as the host of the Millionaire show, this guy brings most of the humor to this movie)
9. Aaron Eckhart in Towelhead (is brilliant in this risky role)
8. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder (hate the guy...loooved this extended cameo)
7. Robert Downey, Jr. in Tropic Thunder (Are we suuuure he isn't black?)
6. Robert Downey, Jr in Iron Man (Though not a huge fan of the movie, HE was excellent)
5. Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road (when he cried...I cried)
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt (much better than his Synechdoche, NY performance)
3. Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road (a great scene stealer)
2. Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (not much to say - a brilliant performance)
1. Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino (okay, playing a cranky old man probably isn't a big stretch...but he does it so well)

10 Best Female Performances of 2008

10. Amy Adams in Doubt (No one does optimistic and hopeful quite like Amy)
9. Jennifer Aniston in Marley & Me (just cuz it's a comedy doesn't mean it wasn't good acting)
8. Kate Winslet in The Reader (extra points just for showing her naughty bits)
7. Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia (Meryl shows in the same year she can do serious to flighty and fun)
6. Catherine Keener in Hamlet 2 (she does bitchy woman well, what can I say?)
5. Penelope Cruz in Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona
4. Rebecca Hall in Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona
3. Audrey Tautou in Priceless (flawless and charming)
2. Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road (She does bored and miserable very well!)

10 Best TV Shows of 2008

10.  House (it's getting a bit redundant...okay...a LOT redundant.  But you gotta love cranky ass House)
9. The Office (who can't relate to obnoxious co-workers and an idiotic boss?)
8. Nip/Tuck (About as much sex and blood as you can get on free cable TV)
7. CSI (Glad Warrick and Sarah are gone...but it won't be the same w/o Grissom)
6. Desperate Housewives (this show feels re-invigorated after a few dull seasons.  Hard for a show to do.  And the addition of creepy Neal McDonough is a definite plus)
5. The Big Bang Theory (as a former nerd and NASA enthusiast...I LOVE this show)
4. How I Met Your Mother (when most sitcoms have bit the dust...this one still keeps me laughing)
3. In Treatment (I still haven't seen all the episodes...but the Monday and Friday ones are good enough to put this show in the top 10)
2.  Dexter (Season 3 was pretty good...but season 2 was FRIGGIN AWESOME)
1. Lost (the show has recovered from its dreadful season 2...but now that some of the survivors are off the island...where will the show go from here? And as long as I get to see Sawyer shirtless for at least 30 minutes this season, I will be pleased)
