Writers Strike

  • Nov. 13th, 2007 at 2:37 AM

Please read to the very end to see how YOU can help end this ridiculous writer's strike that's going to affect our TV/Movie viewing for a LONG time if it isn't resolved soon.

So I had to cross a picket line the other day at my studio. I don't really work for the part of the studio that the writers are picketing...but I did have to cross the line to go to a screening for work. I was SO disappointed in my WGA strikers. They didn't shout anything rude or funny, they didn't have any witty slogans on their picket signs. They didn't even look at us as we walked by. Am I really supposed to feel afraid to cross a picket line if they're just going to move out of my way??? Hopefully next time they'll have more chutzpah!

Anyways, in other strike news, Lost producer Damon Lindelof wrote an op ed piece for the NY Times that totally annoyed me. I DO support the writers' demands...that's all well and good. But I'm pretty annoyed with the producers of Lost in general and his comment about TV being free pissed me off too. This was my response to Lindelof's letter:

While I appreciate reading Mr. Lindelof's point of view regarding the writer's strike, I can't help but still feel extremely annoyed at him and other producers who have been jerking fans around for sometime now. I happen to work for one of those big "greedy" studios he refers to and I whole-heartedly agree that the writers definitely do deserve some royalties for DVDs and internet downloads. But everyone has known that this strike was coming for months and I remember reading about how shows were shooting early to compensate for the impending strike. Now I'm hearing that mid-season shows like Lost and 24 will be delayed even more than they already are. As a 30-year tv fanatic, and Lost-addict, I must say that my annoyance with JJ Abrams and the crew of Lost began well before the strike when they decided to make the public wait until February to air the show. Whatever happened to the good ole days of only having to wait 3 months to find out who shot J.R.? Or whether Sam proposed to Diane or someone else? Or if Ross and Rachel got back together? Now networks and producers are jerking us around more and more by making us wait 6 months for a new episode, especially when they know a strike is coming! As for Lindelof's assertion that television is free, I've got news for him. When was the last time he tried to watch network TV with rabbit ears? If I didn't pay for "basic cable" in my house, a whole 10 miles from the NBC studios, my "free" tv would consist of watching 3 or 4 channels through a very fuzzy picture. My cable company charges ridiculous amounts for me to be able to view 22 extremely frustrating episodes of Lost without fuzz. I understand the writers' plight, and I have my fingers crossed for a swift resolution, but Lindelof should know that if he is "dragged through the streets and burned" it will be because he could have given his fans SOME Lost episodes prior to the strike, instead of making us
miss the whole season!

Disgruntled TV Viewer

And now...for something you can do. A new movement has been started by some of the strike supporters, and it's in its infancy right now. But hopefully you all will send this idea to as many of your tv-viewing friends/family as possible so this idea picks up some steam. Since part of what the writer's are asking for is a 4 cent raise per DVD sold (from the current 4 cents per $20 DVD to 8 cents per $20 DVD), people are mailing 4 pennies to the Producers' Alliance and telling them to put an end to this strike. Maybe if enough people do it and perhaps threaten to stop buying DVDs altogether or something to that effect, it will have an impact. At the very least, it will make for stacks of heavy mail and several pennies to roll! Send your 4 pennies and/or angry letters to:
